About

Go to the light !!!

I just wanted to welcome you to my site.

On Canada Day this year, I arrived in Cobourg. Having been in Ottawa for the last year or so, I wanted to get back to living in a small town.

I've been doing photography for well over two decades. Over the years, I've been published a bit, exhibited, won competitions, tutored and worked with a commercial photographer in Ottawa. What is seen on this current website is but a fraction of all that I've done. A year or so I decided to start afresh and clean the slate so to speak.

I do want to clearly state that not every photograph on this site is seen as art or a masterpiece. Even I know better than that. I do feel that most of them do have some merit though.

Like many artists ( at least I think I am ) my medium is my voice. At times subtle and soft spoken and sometimes nothing short of brutal. Such is life. Rarely do I place value on the "perfect" anything. Producing an image that makes one think, feel or wonder, is really my objective. I am a firm believer that life is about moments and photography is simply a tool that I have some ability with. At least I think so. Just don't ask me to paint anything.

The world is my candy store. Childlike in curiosity, I look, learn, touch and feel all that I can and as often as I can and everything amazes me. For as long as I can remember, I've walked endlessly, hopping on new trails with an open mind while enjoying the silence of my thoughts and taking it all in. More than anything, I see myself as a "professional looker".

Khalil Gibran's quote "To understand the heart and mind of a person, look not at what he has already achieved but what he aspires to." eloquently sums up much of the reality I live. I work with few tools, a camera and a tripod. Nothing glamourous. There's no glamour in any of it but there certainly is wonder.

Lines, shapes, shades and saturated colours entice me but so does the human condition. More and more I see empathy, compassion, love and sympathy as the colours I wish to place on my palette. I can't imagine any art subject greater than people.

Photographers like Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, Edward Steichen and Pete Turner were certainly some of my inspiration but one could easily add Renoir, Matisse, Picasso and the likes. The list is long. At the age of 25 or so my former wife gave me a camera. That remains my greatest gift.

Enjoy your stay and thanks for reading.
